The dynamic-geometry problem is probably the #1 issue that will plague
VRML in the coming year or so. It completely hampers any sort of
large-scale project in VRML, because it imposes an upper bound equivalent
to the amount of memory in the end-user's machine (which usually isn't
enough).
We were working for a while for a detailed recreation of the Sony
Pictures Studio Lot in VRML, but the memory issue was a major
problem for us. We had to resort to using some proprietary multiuser
technology to stream the geometry in and out of the scene, but that was
far from foolproof as well. As it stands right now we're still looking
for solutions. If we ever want to create cyberspace, this issue must be
addressed, pronto...
