Take a look at Chris Crawford's work
on interactive fiction. He has worked
hard to classify emotional states and
a means for creating relationships based
on these. It is impressive. A language
which drives the scene (eg, some Java
version of what Chris uses combined
with VRML externprotos) could be
the ideal tool for non-linear VRML
stories.
If storytelling is to be truly non-linear, then
the storyteller should think more about
how to set up a situation and less about
the direction it takes. To get beyond
linear indeed, beyond the storyteller,
the story should demonstrate
emergent properties of plot. It is possible using
the techniques Crawford designed that
this is doable. The disappointment
for me is the 2D graphics and text of
the Erasmatron. We should ask ourselves
how expensive in terms of resources such an
approach would be if VRML and its rim
notations would be if used in lieu of 2D and
text.
